Asian Architecture

PROJECT 1: CONTEXTUAL ARCHITECTURE STUDY & CASE STUDY PAPER

Objectives

Through this project, I have become able to:
  • Integrate architectural design and research through a specific case study that supports my design through extensive research within the framework of sustainability of design in Asia.
  • Collect, index and evaluate information; analyse information; compile and organise studies; write studies; assemble illustrations and text; design layouts; bind and present my findings..

Learning Outcomes

Through this project, I have gained the ability to:
  • Analyse and discuss in depth on the selected research area based on the selected building, within the framework of Contextual Architecture.
  • Identify significant elements of Contextual Architecture through investigation on the selected building.
  • Produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of Contextual Architecture of the selected building.
  • Produce a case study paper of at least 2000 words long
  • Produce a Power Point presentation which contains an outline of the paper covering key issues and themes explored, as well as bibliography.

Submission Requirements

PART A - Contextual Architecture Study
  • Consisting of the identification of a building that has both vernacular architecture references and strong contextual elements.
  • After this identification, extensive literature reviews are conducted to identify both the vernacular architecture references and contextual elements.
  • The findings are to be shown on an A2 presentation board.

PART B - Case Study Report
  • Using the same building, an issue or topic is identified to define the scope of study, and the title of the research determined based on the issue.
  • A concept mapping is generated that highlights the issue of the case study that includes the proposed research title and research questions, to give an overview of the proposed case study paper in A4 printed sheets
  • A Power Point presentation was prepared to briefly summarize the content of the research paper.
  • The abstract of the paper was constructed in A4 printed sheets.
  • The final submission of the complete research paper of at least 2000 words in A4 printed sheets.

PART A : CONTEXTURE ARCHITECTURE STUDY

PART B : CASE STUDY REPORT

Reflection

Through this project, I have a chance to get to know more deep into Belum Rainforest Resort and also the aesthetic of Malay vernacular house.Every design of them is very unique and functional compare to other country building.

Besides of this, this project also help me to solve my problem for studio during the process of designing. The elements that introduce for Malay Vernacular are truely a strong method to solve current whether problem and also benefit the users of the building.

I can conclude that this project has taught me much about technical theory besides of just design building and also enhance the function of my studio project for this semester.

PROJECT 1 : TAYLOR'S GATEAWAY

TASK
Pre-Design (Design Analysis)

  • Understanding the site: In groups of 2 students, investigate the given site. Record and analyse the site context and the natural environment through photographs and diagrams.
  • Understanding the brief: Identify and research the user needs
  • Based on the site and user needs, brainstorm ideas for exploration of the shed

Schematic Design (Problem Solving)
  • Develop sketch plan and section to respond to environmental and user needs

Design Development (Resolving Design)
  • Develop interior poetics (inside/outside relationship) by taking into account interaction between environment and architectural space/form

LEARNING OUTCOME
  • Identify and analyze environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site
  • Apply ideas of environmental sustainability (gained from precedent studies, ESD and Building Science 1) in architectural design
  • Employ particular material and construction technique

Project 2 : NATURE APPRECIATION CENTRE

TASK

This project requires students to propose a facility accommodating several related functions such as exhibition, learning and recreation in a suburban context. Students are to develop their own concept for the design based on their research of the area and environment. This working method is intended to have the student design in near full-freedom; however they will be required to make an informed response firstly to the surrounding context. Their capacity to respond architecturally and contextually to this task will form part of the basis upon which they will be marked.

The site is located in Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak. Pulau Banding is a 243-hectare man-made island located within the majestic Temenggor Lake. The Island sits amidst the 130 million year-old Royal Belum Rainforest, known for nature based activities such as fishing, bird watching, camping and visiting orang asli settlements.

LEARNING OUTCOME
  • Apply ideas of environmental sustainability in design
  • Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences
  • Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context.
  • Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.

REFLECTION
For me, I can say this is something different from the previous sem 1 to 3, a new kind of design, a new kind of education, a new kind of technique to finish up the work and new lecturers. We are require to design cluster building for this final project to fuse with the context and enhance nature appreciation in the particular site. Although it does bring me some difficulties while doing this project but then the end the result is satisfied. Overall it is amazing to me and taught me many kind of unfamiliar stuffs, appreciated and thanks to lecturers.

  2. Source, cite and discuss themes and references from fields related to the current and contemporary context that are significant in re-telling of stories.
  3. Re-present the story in a graphical approach based on the contemporary context of time.

Tasks Methodology
Your task is to observe the city and her people and document your findings in any of the format options.
Select a chapter from Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino.
  1. Read and describe the story and the ideas extracted from the story.
  2. Creatively adapt the story by way of graphical/visual representation.
  3. (model with dimension of 15cm x 15cm x 15cm; or painting on an A3 sized paper)
  4. Take photo of each work for Portfolio Submission.

The cities selected is Thin City.
Isaura: A city with thousands of wells, that are all connected upward to the city vertically through  a pipe. It has long vertical holes in the ground to withdraw the water.

Zenobia: Stands on high piling with suspended stairway that connected to platforms with housing units on it. The city planning are not well but as the city grew, they still carry the essence of the first blocks of the building.

Armilla: City with nothing but just pipes, water, tap, shower head, bathtub and all those toilets features. It has no walls nor ceilings as well as floor. Pipes that goes vertically upward in the city making people think if people ran away or it was meant for some other entity.

Sophronia: City that splits into half. One half is full with building that provides entertainment; one half is filled with building that provides formal services. The part that is with entertainment will remain for as long as the city stands, but the another half will be demolished on a every year basis.

Octavia: A city that sits on web that hang between two cliff. The houses in the city are transparent and can see through throughout the city.

Description on artworks:

Isaura, Zenobia, Armilla, Sophronia and Octavia are cities listed in thin cities. These cities reflects the personalities found in the growth in everyone’s life. Prosperity, Desire, Amnesia, Reside and Trust. Each person will undergo phase that might change his/her personality.
